The Inquisitor v1.00 by Cory Benjamin
Copyright (c) 1994 Mohawk Software. All rights reserved.
About:
Have you ever wished you had one program that would pull out FILE_ID.DIZ
or DESC.SDI descriptions from all known archive types, extract size information
from graphics and sample rate/duration from sound files? If so, keep reading.
But first, the disclaimer:
Requirements:
The Inquisitor was made to run with RemoteAccess v2.0X. It requires a
PC compatible computer and MS or PC DOS V3.3 or higher. Although not
necessary, a disk-caching program will increase performance many times over.
Because RAMGR itself takes alot of conventional memory, the more of that you
have free, the better.
Warranty:
This program is not warranted in any way except that it will take up space
on your hard drive (no promises on exactly how much, however). Reasonable
precautions have been taken to ensure that it will NOT: 1. Deplete the ozone
layer and/or promote global warming; 2. Cause household pets to start wearing
leather jackets; or 3. Create a scandal if you decide to run for President*.
* Unless, of course, you use it without registering or fail to pay Social
Security for your hired help who use it on your system.
License:
You are granted a limited license to use this program for 30 days or to
generate half of the descriptions on your BBS. If you wish to use this program
beyond the trial period you must register. You may distribute this program
freely in any archive form as long as INQUISIT.EXE, INQUISIT.DOC, INQUISIT.REG,
INCONFIG.EXE and FILE_ID.DIZ are left unaltered and no charge is made for
copies beyond routine access/copying fees.
Operation:
The Inquisitor is intended to retrieve information about as many types of
files as is possible. In addition, if it fails to find information in the
file it's looking at, it will attempt to locate a FILES.BBS in the current
directory. If THAT fails, it will search the list file of your choice for a
description. I will explain The Inquisitor's operation by file type, or,
optionally, FILES.BBS and/or search of another files list (user-specified,
generally called an allfiles list).
Currently Supported File Types:
ARC/ARJ/DWC/HYP/LZH/PAK/RAR/SDA/SDN/SQZ/ZIP/ZOO: Attempt to retrieve
FILE_ID.DIZ followed by DESC.SDI. If not found, look for FILES.BBS and/or,
optionally, search of another file list (user-specified).
LHA/ADS: Attempt to retrieve description for LHA from corresponding ADS file.
If not found, attempt to retrieve FILE_ID.DIZ from LHA or description
from FILES.BBS or file list (user-specified).
BMP/GIF/PCX/SCx/TGA: Insert size information at beginning of description,
replacing existing size info if recognized. Attempt to retrieve description
from FILES.BBS or optional file list (user-specified) if no description exists.
NOTE: The following SCx formats are recognized:
320x200x16 -SCD, 640 x200x16-SCE, 640x350x16 -SCR, 640x480x16 -SCP,
800x600x16 -SCG, 1024x768x16-SCU, 320x200x256-SCI, 320x400x256-SCK,
360x480x256 -SCQ, 640x400x256-SCL, 640x480x256-SCF, 800x600x256-SCN,
1024x768x256-SCO, Text -SCZ. 640x350x256 is assumed to be SCW
(not entirely sure). Information and samples of other sizes would be
greatly appreciated.
VOC/WAV: Insert sample rate, bits/sample and length (seconds) at beginning
of description, replacing existing size info if recognized. Attempt to
retrieve description from FILES.BBS or optional file list (user-specified) if
no description exists.
MOD (IBM/Amiga sound module): Retrieve title from file if no description
exists.
Configuration:
Type INCONFIG. A menu will appear where you can select the paths to the
utilities Inquisitor needs to operate, the path and name of the optional
ALLFILES listing and the options to attempt to read from .ADS, .SDA and
FILES.BBS listings. The bottom section allows you to select which file
extensions you want Inquisitor to examine. Use the arrow keys to navigate and
ENTER to change a line. Hit ESC to exit; your current configuration will be
saved. Important: INQUISIT and INCONFIG may be located anywhere in your
path, however, they MUST be in the same directory.
Notes:
If you enter an editor name, and have .ADS and .SDA retrieval turned
on, your editor will pop up every time it encounters such a file. This
is because these .ADS and .SDA descriptions can be very large. If you
want the whole thing imported, however, just leave the edit field blank.
The offset information in the files.bbs/allfiles menu means this:
Type in the number of the column in your files.bbs or allfiles where the
name or description is. Example for a allfiles list:
11111111112222222222333
12345678901234567890123456789012
INQUIS10.ZIP 07-20-94 20000 Inquisitor 1.00.

Name offset (1) Description offset (32)
** THE MAGIC KEY TO GET INTO INCONFIG IS ^ **
Configuring Remote Access:
RACONFIG -> OPTIONS -> FILES -> RAMGR FnKeys: After selecting the FnKey
you want to use, enter the following: [PATH]INQUISIT @ #, where # should be
replaced with the number of the FnKey you chose. Notice that Inquisitor
can run under any of the 5 FnKeys, as long as you tell it which one
you are using! (Note the example below.)
NOTE: If you have a very large file database, RAMGR will hog up a lot of
precious memory that Inquisitor needs to run your archiving programs with. If
this is the case, add *m to the end of the command line, which will tell RAMGR
to shell some of its memory to disk, giving Inquisitor its necessary memory.
Some archivers, particularily RAR, require a lot more memory than others. If
you have a disk-caching program loaded, the added delay with adding *m will be
minimal...

Using Inquisitor:
Run RAMGR, enter a file area and press ALT and the function key you
selected. The Inquisitor will scan all files below the cursor. You may abort
at any time by pressing CTRL-ALT. You may also change configuration on-the-fly
by pressing CTRL-SHIFT; this will load INCONFIG. Anything you change in
INCONFIG will be activated from that point on. NOTE: Until the registration
key is entered, you will have to press ENTER as each file is scanned. As soon
as you register, it will AUTOMATICALLY go down your whole file area!!!
Registration and Bug Reports:
Send $7.00 (plus applicable tax for NY residents) by check or money order
(money orders will be processed faster) along with your name EXACTLY as entered
in RACONFIG to Toby Marsh (distributor) at the address below. Your key
information and instructions will be sent by netmail or snailmail if no net
address is given. Questions and comments may be netmailed to Toby Marsh or Cory
Benjamin (the author) c/o Catfish Mecca, FIDO 1:2609/14, 315-336-8948. I also
belong to AtariNet, DoorNet, GodNet, ITCNet and SKYNet; the addresses are listed
below. Mail addressed to Cory via one of these nodes should reach him within 24
hours.
If you encounter a file that The Inquisitor doesn't recognize, please send
the file along with your bug report.
Known bugs:
A few people have complained about Inquisitor having a rough time handling
large allfiles lists (over 2 megs). I have been unable to recreate any of these
errors (I made a 15 meg allfile list and ran Inquisitor with 282k of memory
before running RAMgr), and it worked fine. However, with the delicate nature
of interfacing between RAMgr, archiving programs, etc..., things can happen.
If you find a problem, please let me know... Before reporting to me, see
if the file "$IMPORT$.IMP" exists in your RA directory. If it does, try
deleting that and see if it fixes the problem. This is a temporary file that
should be deleted by Inquisitor, but can hang around under certain conditions.
Although problems can happen here and there, I hope you enjoy the basic
workability of The Inquisitor.
